What Do You Want?

From the time I was a young boy, I had desires in life and for the future that I hoped would come true.

It may sound cliche, but I think we all have had hopes and dreams about the life that we wanted to come to fruition. However, when I became a Christian those desires I had about the future and what I wanted to happen in life were transformed. This was as a result of coming to an understanding of God's purpose for me and the Holy Spirit's work in transforming my heart. My desires in life were transformed from those of selfish ambition to desires of honoring God.

When you came to Christ, you saw this change, too. Your desires and dreams in life were transformed. You saw the emptiness that material possessions brought. You strived to fulfill your God-given desires, to have a God-honoring family,  a meaningful and God-glorifying career or ministry, healthy relationships, etc. Don't get me wrong, these are all good desires that God has placed in the believer.

So what's the problem?

As usual, the problem is with us, NOT God.

In our striving to make these dreams and desires happen,  we often lose sight of why or for who we are striving. You may have heard a message that goes something like this: We as people often get so caught up in the gift that we forget the gift-giver, who is God. I believe this message to be true, but there's more. You see, our desires in life can be right and good, but they might never come to be. In fact, things in your life may be going extremely wrong.

As much as it might pain us to realize, God does not owe us earthly comfort.

God does not owe us a close-knit family, healthy relationships, and meaningful work, those are all His blessings. Those are good blessings to desire, don't get me wrong. However, they are not always delivered how we may have dreamed. Sin muddles the equation. We live life in a world with unbelievers and with believers that are not completely rid of the effect sin has on their lives.

Getting back to the message I told you about,  God is not only the gift-giver, He is the GIFT. In our desire to receive those blessings and have our desires met, we can lose sight of the only gift and blessing that we should desire with all of our heart, who is GOD. Let your heart rest in that.

This is my encouragement to you; Continue to dream and desire, but don't rest your hope on these dreams. When God doesn't deliver all the earthy blessings for which you hoped, know this; God is the blessing, God is the hope, don't just thank God as the gift-giver, desire and know him as the GIFT!
